5 Food Allergy Myths
Tuesday, July 5, 2011
The most common food allergies are milk, eggs, peanuts, fruits (strawberries, cherries, peaches) and fish. These conditions should be treated carefully as they can have serious consequences. Here are some food allergy myths:
Food allergies are not dangerous
Peanuts, tree nuts or seafood allergies are more likely to cause anaphylactic shock which can threaten your life. Symptoms of food allergies include hives, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, difficulty swallowing and fainting.
Food is less allergenic when cooked
With allergies, the body reacts to protein in food. Even if food is cooked the protein remains. There are exceptions for those who are allergic to egg whites and milk: in some cases can consume products that contain them, such as cakes
Allergic reactions will become more intense
The intensity of reactions can't be anticipated. They can be the same intensity, milder or stronger. But symptoms can differ: at one time vomiting occurs, another time hives.
A small bite can't hurt
In fact, if for example you are allergic to peanuts, you don't even have to eat peanuts to become sick. A piece of chocolate with traces of peanuts is enough to cause an allergic reaction.
Allergy symptoms appear several days after consumption
Symptoms rarely occur a few days later, usually they appear within minutes or at most two hours after the first bite.
